Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the delivery of social services across the world, including India. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools like chatbots, machine learning, predictive analytics, and natural language processing have the ability to support evidence-based decision-making, identify vulnerable groups, improve case management, and improve service delivery. AI is being incorporated more and more into welfare programs, healthcare, education, government, and child protection in India, opening up new avenues for social work practice. However, the application of AI presents serious ethical issues with regard to digital exclusion, algorithmic prejudice, privacy, confidentiality, informed consent, accountability, and human rights protection. Adoption of AI must supplement human judgment and empathy, not replace it, since social work is based on professional ideals like equality, dignity, social justice, and human relationships. This essay investigates the future of AI-enabled social work practice in India, addresses the ethical issues surrounding its application, and looks at the prospects that AI presents in the field of social work. It makes the case that in order to provide fair and inclusive social welfare services, responsible AI governance, digital literacy, ethical standards, and capacity building among social work professionals are crucial.
